Helen Godfrey

Helen grew up in Manchester and started playing the ‘cello at the age of 10. She was awarded a junior exhibition by the Manchester Education Authority and became principal ‘cellist in the Manchester Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, as well as being involved in many smaller ensembles in the area. Subsequently, Helen went on to study for a degree in music at Sheffield University, before moving to Cambridge in the mid ‘80s.

She has been much in demand as a performer in many chamber groups and orchestras, including the Sinfonia of Cambridge and has performed as a soloist in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto on a couple of occasions, as well as doing some solo ‘cello work with The Cambridge Voices.

Her musical tastes are very broad and she has been involved in recording backing tracks for pop music, as well as playing in shows, contemporary music groups and providing background music for functions. After having spent several years dividing her time between library work and private ‘cello teaching, Helen became a full-time ‘cello teacher in 2002 and now teaches at the Perse Schools, (Prep. , Girls and Boys) in Cambridge. Her teaching has also included a great deal of chamber music coaching.
